Congratulations to RWCMD’s Head of Jazz Studies and multi-instrumentalist Paula Gardiner, who has been shortlisted for the 2012 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

Featuring alongside some of the most prolific names on the UK jazz scene, Paula has been nominated for the Education Award for her teaching and outreach work.

In addition to pioneering the MA and BMus courses in jazz performance at RWCMD, Paula is known for her passion and talent for sharing music across the community, helping to make jazz and improvised music accessible and enjoyable across a multitude of cultural backgrounds and musical playing styles.

Her current projects include Torchbearers, a performance in association with the 2012 Cultural Olympiad for which she will be working with over 160 performers from the South Wales Valleys and the township of Langa in South Africa, directing the community choirs and writing the score.

Every summer Paula runs a jazz summer school for young people at RWCMD, which culminates in a performance at the Brecon Jazz Festival.  This year, she will co-ordinate the College’s own jazz festival, building on the success of last year’s Jazz Sunday, and the growing popularity of its regular Jazz Time slot. She has also established a residency for RWCMD jazz musicians at the Hay Festival.

Paula continues to maintain a busy performing schedule as part of a number of well-known jazz ensembles including The Paula Gardiner Trio and DSQ, the Dave Stapleton Quintet.
