RWCMD Theatre Design graduate and puppet maker Rachael Canning brought a fairytale full of “juice, lust and fire” to Cardiff this weekend with her touring show The Girl With the Iron Claws.

The show is an inventive take on a dark Nordic fairy-tale, featuring puppetry, music and humour. The company behind the show is The Wrong Crowd – which was formed by Rachael and writer/director Hannah Mulder.

Since she graduated from RWCMD, Rachael’s work includes design and puppet direction for a number of productions including Magical Night for the Royal Opera House, The City Madam for the RSC and Into the Woods at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

Rachael said “For our first show we’re retelling a powerful tale. We’re passionate about these old stories and what they have to offer modern audiences, both old and young. Many of these rich stories were sanitised by the Victorians and we want to explore earlier versions and inject some of that juice, lust and fire back into them.”

And if you’re interested in puppetry, come along to our annual puppetry show this summer and see the work of the theatre designers of the future.
