We are really excited that World Stage  Design 2013 has not only chosen Cardiff for its European home, but that it will take place right here at RWCMD!

Originating in Toronto in 2005 and then taking place in Seoul in 2009, this celebration of performance design attracts the most prolific stage designers, architects and theatre professionals from across the world and will seek to “create a centre of activity, diversity, widening participation and multicultural exchange”.

The exhibition of work from practitioners from across the world will take place between the 8th and 15th of September and will be an incredible opportunity for students at RWCMD to engage with an exciting range of artistic and engineering creativity, right here on their doorstep. It is also a chance for actors, musicians, performers and the public to experience and appreciate the work of those who create the performance environment.

This event builds on the Society of British Theatre Designers’ 2011 exhibition ‘Transformation and Revelation’, in which the work of some of the UK’s best contemporary theatre designers was displayed here at the College.

The World Stage Design exhibition and Scenofest will focus on the work of individuals, rather than whole countries and will provide a programme of workshops, performances and presentations across the ten day period.

“Cardiff is an ideal location to host this international festival of performance design when it visits the UK in September 2013.  The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is one of the UK’s leading drama schools and having recently undergone a huge development project, its landmark performance and exhibition spaces will provide the perfect backdrop for a celebration of creative practice. Thousands of industry professionals, emerging practitioners, students and public from across the globe will gather in Cardiff for World Stage Design. The city, as a thriving cosmopolitan capital rich in cultural identity, will provide the perfect backdrop to the inspirational programme of performances, exhibitions and creative exploration.”
Sean Crowley: Director of Drama RWCMD and Project Leader WSD
