One theatre, two designers, £20k, and oodles of volunteers went into making the temporary and sustainable Willow Theatre that’s here in the courtyard at RWCMD during World Stage Design 2013. Here’s how it got here.

- Take one design brief to design a sustainable theatre for World Stage Design 2013 and send it out into the world.
- Receive over 100 entries from designers and architects from over 26 countries.
- Choose the winner – The Willow Theatre by architect Tim Lai and theatre designer Brad Steinmetz from Ohio, USA.
- Build the theatre in a courtyard here at RWCMD in just a few weeks, using reclaimed, reusable and recyclable materials and a team of local and international volunteers – many of them students from the college.
- Put on a series of performances, presentations and seminars by theatre design practitioners from across the globe as part of World Stage Design.
And here it is… one weatherproof, sound-proof, sustainable, temporary theatre seating 150 people – all for an outlay of less than £20k.
