One theatre, two designers, £20k, and oodles of volunteers went into making the temporary and sustainable Willow Theatre that’s here in the courtyard at RWCMD during World Stage Design 2013. Here’s how it got here.

  1. Take one design brief to design a sustainable theatre for World Stage Design 2013 and send it out into the world.
  2. Receive over 100 entries from designers and architects from over 26 countries.
  3. Choose the winner  – The Willow Theatre by architect Tim Lai and theatre designer Brad Steinmetz from Ohio, USA.
  4. Build the theatre in a courtyard here at RWCMD in just a few weeks, using reclaimed, reusable and recyclable materials and a team of local and international volunteers – many of them students from the college.
  5. Put on a series of performances, presentations and seminars by theatre design practitioners from across the globe as part of World Stage Design.

And here it is… one weatherproof, sound-proof, sustainable, temporary theatre seating 150 people – all for an outlay of less than £20k.
