Great news for RWCMD graduate Chris Avison (that’s him on the right of the picture above), who has been appointed Principal Trumpet for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Chris studied here at the college with Philippe Schartz, working alongside the orchestra of Welsh National Opera and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. During his time here, he performed three times for the College’s patron His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. As a student, Chris formed the quintet Bute Brass – which won the inter-collegiate brass quintet competition against the other UK conservatoires, and held an educational residency and recital at Aldeburgh.

Chris has worked with many professional orchestras and ensembles – like the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera and the Orchestra of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. He is featured as a soloist on the recording ‘Dragons’ Rise – A Tribute to Professor James Watson’, accompanied by Marylebone Brass.

Kevin Price, Head of Brass at RWCMD said: “Chris made a great impact at RWCMD during his undergraduate  studies. From the outset, his musicality, wonderful singing tone and versatility marked him as a potential professional. Chris worked extremely hard during his time at RWCMD and  he embraced every opportunity that was offered to him. To gain a principal trumpet position  at such a young age is truly outstanding.”
