The winner and runner-up in this year’s Jacobson Prize Competition gave their prizewinners’ recital in the Dora Stoutzker Hall at lunchtime today.

William Shaw (above right), who came first in the competition open to all pianists at the College, performed Scriabin’s ‘technically overwhelming’ Fifth Sonata.

Runner-up Jack Hughes, who performed Medtner’s Sonata Tragica said, “I think the best part of the day was the rehearsal time we were given in the hall prior to the concert – it was quite overwhelming being completely alone in a concert hall with an instrument that is second to none, and although I had half an hour to rehearse the music for the recital, I couldn’t stop myself from trying other repertoire on the piano while I had the opportunity. The performance was a fantastic experience, the only downside was that it was all over too soon.”

“A huge pleasure for me today, listening to such confident and characterful performances”
Richard McMahon, Head of Keyboard Studies
