Percussion graduate Dave Danford has the ultimate in portfolio careers. Not only does he work as a freelance percussionist performing throughout the UK and overseas, he also works as a composer and producer – and manages two orchestras.

As orchestra manager of British Sinfonietta, Dave recently organised – and performed in – two concerts with Dame Evelyn Glennie. Dave explains:

“I initially had the idea for these concerts in June 2012 and approached Evelyn directly to ask if she’d be interested. She sent through various repertoire suggestions and I then started putting together the full programme.”

“The most satisfying part of my role as an orchestral manager is that it gives me more opportunities as a percussionist. Whenever possible I play percussion with the orchestra and thankfully the Evelyn Glennie project was one such occasion.”

“Working with Evelyn is always inspiring because you are in the presence of somebody who is at the very top of their game, both as an international soloist and as an outstanding percussionist.”

And Dave wasn’t the only RWCMD graduate performing at the concert. Pianist Dawn Hardwick was a soloist at the concerts, and there are over 20 other graduates performing with the orchestra.
