Congratulations to graduate Matt Hardy, who’s been appointed as Principal Timpanist for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Matt graduated from RWCMD with a first class degree in 2010. He has worked with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Sinfonia Cymru. As a teacher, he works with students at Wells Cathedral School, tutors for the National Youth Wind Ensemble and has run youth projects in primary schools across Wales.

Matt said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been offered a position within the SCO. Throughout my trial period I have been amazed with not only the quality of music making, but also the total commitment from all members. I cannot wait to begin my time as a permanent member of the Orchestra.

“The orchestral and ensemble opportunities that RWCMD offer are the main reason why I am lucky enough to work in this industry. Regular repertoire sessions and placement schemes with the two local professional orchestras give you all the skills and assets to be able to try and gain work with these ensembles. The standard of teaching and mentoring is fantastic and the support I had from the staff at college as a whole was – and still is – superb!”
