“Theatre design allows you to be very individual, and creative, and artistic, while it’s also a very practical job that requires you to think logically… each new job is a whole new area to explore and learn about, whether that’s history, or a particular culture, or politics.”

In an interview with LeftLion, theatre design graduate Madeleine Girling talks about her training at RWCMD, and what she loves about being a theatre designer.

Madeleine graduated in 2012, designing the college’s production of Blood Wedding (pictured above) in her final year. She was one of the winners of the 2013 Linbury Prize.

Madeleine spent a year working as an Assistant Designer at the RSC, where she designed two of the productions of the Midsummer Mischief festival.

Her current projects include Time and the Conways and Arcadia for the Nottingham Playhouse – the company she worked with on her Linbury-winning designs.
