Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Welsh National Opera, David Pountney has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Welsh College in recognition of his contribution both as an artist and a cultural leader.
Vocal student Michael Lowe entertained guests at the event, singing from Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, accompanied by repetiteur David Doidge. Michael, who attended the College’s Junior Conservatoire, was also in the WNO youth choir and sang in their production of The Sleeper. It was there he met students from the College who encouraged him to audition for a place on its music course. David graduated from the Royal Welsh College last year and is now a full-time repetiteur at WNO.
On receiving the award David Pountney stressed the vital importance of the College’s role in injecting “such a vital stream of young talent into the arteries of our cultural life.
“It is really a great honour for me to receive this award,“ he continued, “The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is an absolute lynchpin of Wales’ extremely high international profile in the arts.”
