Two students from the brass department, Jack Lapthorn (above right) and Grant Jameson (left), have reached the semi-final of the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award, the annual nationwide search for most talented young performers.

During the semi-final – which will be recorded at the BBC’s Philharmonic Studio in Salford and broadcast on Radio 2 in February – Jack and Grant will join six other semi-finalists to perform with The Brighouse and Rastrick Band, one of the UK’s top brass bands.

Jack says: “It’s really exciting, as we’ll each record 10 minutes of music of our own choice with the famous Brighouse and Rastrick Band.  We’re so thrilled to have reached the semi-final of this prestigious competition that has seen many previous  winners go on to achieve great things in the music industry.”

Here’s Grant talking to presenter Clare Freeman and performing a piece by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins.

The competition has a strong track record for spotting the UK’s emerging talent. Previous winners of the award have included Katrina Marzella (Solo Baritone with Black Dyke), Ben Thomson (Principal Tuba of the Royal Opera House Orchestra), and Lewis Musson (Solo Euphonium, Central Band of the RAF).
