Composition students are working on an exciting project with Music Theatre Wales, one of the UK’s most innovative new opera companies. Five composers have each been partnered with a writer to develop an aria inspired by the first world war collections at St Fagan’s, the National History Museum of Wales.

As part of the process, the students also took part in a public masterclass with the composer Jonathan Dove. The final pieces will be performed at St Fagan’s National History Museum in July. Here’s a video from our friends at Music Theatre Wales about the project.

A piece that came from the collaborations during the 2013 project has now been developed into a full opera. Spyros Syrmos’ work The Blank Canvas got a four-star review from The Guardian and won on Offie (Off West End Award) for Best Opera.
