Actor, comedian, writer and RWCMD graduate Katy Wix has just published her second book of comic monologues, responding to a demand from acting students for contemporary, funny but intelligent audition pieces.

Katy studied acting at the Royal Welsh College, graduating in 2003. Since leaving she has featured in, and written for numerous notable programmes including classic comedies such as Absolutely Fabulous Miranda, her own show Anna & Katy, and more recently taking the lead in BBC Three’s Fried and Together, and a new series of Agatha Raisin (pictured above) due to air on Sky One this year.

“My time at RWCMD was invaluable,” says Katy.

“The training gave me a confidence, and more importantly the means to take one’s craft seriously and not be afraid to take up space in the world and celebrate your unique voice. It’s a constant struggle not to compare yourself or your career to other people’s as this way leads to misery and insanity.

I’m so thrilled that the students have found the first book useful and hopefully the second book will be of equal worth.”

Many College students have used Katy’s monologues for their own showcases including recent graduate Rebecca Newman who is currently touring her own play, The Enduring Love of Cathy & Heathcliff.

The College has always focused on the creative process as a whole, collaborating with new writers, creating its NEW season, and encouraging students to write as part of their course. Many graduates, including Ruth Jones, Rob Brydon and Moira Buffini (Wonder.land, Tamara Drew, Welcome to Thebes) as well as Katy, have forged hugely successful careers in this field.

Katy said in a recent Guardian interview that she hoped these books would encourage women to write for themselves.

“What I’ve written is all about real female voices and different types of women. Women who actually swear, and are allowed to be rude or intelligent. It would just be nice to have more 3D characters like this. I was going through plays and trying to find the bit when women speak, and it’s quite difficult sometimes.”

This is Katy’s second book of Comic Monologues, the first was given the seal of approval from the mighty Queen of Comedy Jennifer Saunders, while this new one has a foreword by Catastrophe’s Sharon Horgan.
The Oberon Book of Comic Monologues for Women is available now.
