Harpist Llewelyn Jones, currently in the final year of his undergraduate studies at RWCMD, was one of the four winners of the Lyon & Healy Awards, which were held for the first time in Europe last weekend as part of RWCMD’s Ingenious Harp festival.

The other winners were Jasmin-Isabel Kühne and Markus Thalheimer from Germany, and Elizabeth Bass from the UK.

41 young harpists travelled from across the UK, Europe and further afield to compete for the prestigious awards, which have been held annually in the USA for many years.

Each contestant performed the required repertoire from Benjamin Britten’s Suite for Harp and Gabriel Faure’s Impromptu pour la Harpe in the Dora Stoutzker Hall in front of a public audience and a panel of adjudicators including Maria Luisa Rayan-Forero and Jana Boušková.

The winners receive £2,000 prize money to assist with their future studies. Llewelyn said he was ‘on cloud nine’ following the win. He plans to study for a Masters degree at RWCMD next year.
