It’s Prime Time for Graduates

Acting

As the autumn nights draw in and the television channels roll out their most popular dramas, we were struck by the number of recent RWCMD graduates making an appearance in our living room:

ITV’s Downton may have taken its leave, leaving us pondering whether Tom Cullen‘s character Lord Gillingham (above), will be the man to win Lady Mary’s heart, but BBC’s Ripper Street continues to thrill audiences with its gothic and grisly portrayal of Victorian street life.

Gillian-Saker-Ripper-Street

Gillian Saker (above), who graduated last year and has already appeared in E4’s Misfits, returns as Bella Culver, a prostitute who appeared in the final episode of the last series and has now married main character Sergeant Drake.

Joanna-Vanderham-The-Paradi

Also on BBC One is the second series of The Paradise featuring Joanna Vanderham (left) as shop girl made good, Miss Denise. Joanna has already been nominated for an International Emmy for Best Actress for her role in Sky 1’s The Runaway, which she filmed before graduating. She’s also featured in Poliakoff’s Dancing on the Edge, and plays alongside Steve Coogan and Julianne Moore in the newly released film What Maisie Knew.

Kimberley Nixon may have started her TV career before she even graduated by donning a bonnet in BBC’s Cranford alongside Dame Judi Dench, but she is currently firmly ensconsed in the present day:  living the students life in C4’s Fresh Meat, and as newly pregnant Sarah in BBC’s award-winning sit com, Hebburn.

…And watch out for Amy Morgan, as shop assistant Gracie in ITV’s Mr Selfridge, which is opening again for business  in January  2014.
