From Messiaen to McTell: Autumn Highlights at RWCMD

22 August 2016

Welcome to another performance packed Autumn Season at the Royal Welsh College.

This autumn sees the launch of two new strands of programming in the College’s performance calendar, The International Artists Series, and Legends at the Royal Welsh College, as well as a wide range of visiting artists including Lawrence Power, Ralph McTell and Iestyn Davies, and a festival celebrating the music of Messiaen.

The International Artists Series will provide audiences with an opportunity to experience world class artists in the intimate setting of the Dora Stoutzker Hall.

The series makes a high profile debut with appearances by French keyboard wizards, Katia & Marielle Labèque and German soprano Anne Schwanewilms.

This series has been generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales.

Legends at the Royal Welsh College will showcase stars of stage & screen, discussing their illustrious lives and careers in front of an audience.

The first two legends both making a rare appearance in Wales are celebrated actress Dame Siân Phillips, and the ever popular Patricia Routledge.

In music, Llŷr Williams embarks on the final year of his complete Beethoven Sonata cycle, and firm favourites Steven Osborne and Stephen Hough return to the Steinway International Piano Series alongside the dynamic and rising American star Jeremy Denk.

The three-day festival celebrating Messiaen brings together the Gould Piano Trio, Cordelia Williams, Peter Hill and Pascal Gallois among others, as well as music students from the College.

Rising star saxophonist Tom Harrison, will be launching his new album Unfolding in Tempo at RWCMD in October, and the College will be celebrating Head of Composition John Hardy‘s 60th birthday with a concert showcasing John’s music for stage and screen.

Our visiting theatre programme is equally eclectic offering broad farce with Black Rat’s Bouncers, stunning physical theatre in Idle Motion’s Shooting with Light and political insight in the Nottingham Playhouse production of Tony’s Last Tape.

The College’s Richard Burton Company’s autumn season includes The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Chekov’s Three Sisters, Killer Joe by Tracy Letts and Simon Stephen’s Blindsided.
