Llŷr Williams, Creating Pictures in Music at the Royal Welsh College

30 October 2018

The Royal Welsh College is delighted to announce a further performance series with the critically-acclaimed Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams. Pictures in Music, featuring music which is strongly visual in its inspiration and impact on the listener, will begin in May 2019 and will see Llŷr return to the College’s Dora Stoutzker Hall.

Llŷr, who is also a Fellow of the College, is widely admired for his profound musical intelligence, and for the expressive and communicative nature of his interpretations, and for the concentration and focus of his platform presence.

“It struck me recently just how many pieces I’ve played over the years that have descriptive or pictorial titles and it seemed fitting to bring many of them together as ‘Pictures in Music,’” explains Llŷr.

“Most of the repertoire comes from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and originates in quite a few different countries, ranging from Britten’s Holiday Diary, inspired by a holiday in North Wales, to deepest Russia with Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky in the final programme.”

As well as attending all of his performances, Royal Welsh College students benefit from masterclasses with Llŷr in his role as the department’s Artist in Association.

This series follows from Llyr’s hugely successful complete Beethoven Cycle, and Schubert Recital series at the College over the last four years. Llŷr will continue his Schubert series at the College on Thursday 31 January.

Tickets can be purchased from the College’s website or from calling Box Office on 029 39 139120

His final recital in this series, in January 2019, will include two Liszt song transcriptions between the sonatas.

The College’s International Steinway Series continues with South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son on Sunday 18th November, and Yulianna Avdeeva on Sunday 20th January.

All concerts are in the College’s Dora Stoutzker Hall.
