17 January 2017

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama’s Richard Burton Company’s celebration of new writing returns for a fourth year.

The season features four brand-new plays by emerging writers and directors, performed and produced by the Richard Burton Company, and premiering in Cardiff before transferring to the Gate Theatre, London.

New-17.2

The College will be working with long-term NEW collaborators Paines Plough and the Royal Court Theatre, producing plays by Alison Carr (Iris), Simon Longman (Milked) and Eve Leigh (Stone Face).

RWCMD is also collaborating again with Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre to produce a new play by composer/writer Conor Mitchell, (The Moot Virginity of Catherine of Aragon.)

  • Alasdair McDowell’s Pomona, was originally commissioned as part of NEW 2014. It went on to runs at the Royal Exchange & National Theatre, winning numerous awards for playwright and director
  • Ned Bennett directed Pomona at the College, and then The Orange Tree Theatre, National Theatre and Royal Exchange, wining a UK Theatre Award for Best Director for Pomona and for Yen (2015) which transferred from the Royal Exchange to the Royal Court. Ned cast Annes Elwy in Yen after working with her as a student at RWCMD in Pomona.
  • Emily Barber’s performance in the 2014 season was attended by the Casting Director for the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre and led to her being cast in their new production of Billy Liar and, subsequently, the current West End production of The Importance of Being Earnest.
  • Paines Plough collaborated with RWCMD on Growth for NEW 2015 and took it to the Fringe this year where it won a Fringe First and is now on a UK tour.  It was re-cast into a 3-hander with the female parts being performed by Remy Beasley (BA Acting 2010).
