It’s just been announced that RWCMD graduate Justina Gringyte will play the title role in English National Opera’s 2015 production of Carmen – the first revival of Catalan director Calixto Bieito’s acclaimed 2012 production of Bizet’s fiery opera, set in the final days of Franco’s regime in Spain.

This will be Justina’s role debut for ENO. She made her house debut for the company this year, as Maddalena in Christopher Alden’s production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. Opera Britannia said: “The vampish Maddalena of Justina Gringyte, towering over Banks at the curtain call, was fabulous, her ripe mezzo the perfect foil for Christy’s soprano in the quartet.”

After graduating from RWCMD, Justina joined the National Opera Studio, then the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons.  She returned to the Royal Opera House in 2013/14 as Flowermaiden in Wagner’s Parsifal and will sing Maddalena in Rigoletto at Covent Garden this autumn. Her current role is Fenena in Welsh National Opera’s Nabucco.

Justina’s performance in Carmen will also be broadcast in cinemas across the UK as part of ENO Screen.
