Production and Design

Theatre design students were visited by celebrated designer Ralph Koltai, who has designed around 250 productions in an international career that has spanned 65 years. And at aged 90, he’s still working in the field – his latest project is designing two shows for Welsh National Opera’s 2015/16 season. He talked about being an artist…

“One wonderful thing about being artist is you don’t ever retire. Art speaks to me. There was never a decision about whether to do it. I have to.”

He gave advice to aspiring designers…

“Luck does not happen. You create luck. You do things and go places, and in doing so, things happen. You must be open to new opportunities.”

And Ralph was full of love for RWCMD…

“I have been to a lot of colleges, but this is the best institution for your course.  You are all very lucky to be studying here, at what is absolutely the best course for theatre design in the country.”
