In October, College conducting students met Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the Hallé Orchestra, during rehearsals for a concert at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff.
He offered advice and guidance on the professional challenges that face conductors in the early years of their career.

“Sir Mark told us that we needed to know the score inside out,” said Masters student, Jane Chan.”  Also that we need to take every opportunity to network.

He said that every conductor gets nervous but that we should acknowledge and make use of our nerves.  A good orchestra will know we’re new and they’ll work with us.”

This term RWCMD Junior Fellow in Conducting Tianyi Lu, who recently graduated from the College, also had a masterclass with Xian Zhang, Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

“She is such an inspiration to me so to work with her was amazing,” said Tianyi.

“She was really encouraging and supportive which really hugely developed not just my skills but my confidence.”
