As BBC Cardiff Singer of the World returns to Cardiff this week, we grabbed a photo opportunity with 2015 finalist, Blaise Malaba, who has since taken up an MA in Opera for Performance at the College.

From studying International Relations in Ukraine, Blaise took up vocal training in 2012 and went on to reach the final 20 performers at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2015.

There, he met Angela Livingstone, the College’s Head of Opera and Vocal Performance and one of the audition panelists for Cardiff Singer of the World, when he auditioned for the competition

After being invited to visit the College for a Masterclass with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, the bass vocalist joined the College’s MA in Opera for Performance course in 2016.

Blaise is now supported by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and joined her once again for a sold-out Masterclass in the Dora Stoutzker Hall in 2017. He is also supported by the Waterloo Foundation and the Leverhulme Trust.

After he graduates in July, Blaise will join the English National Opera in their co-production with Dutch National Opera of Porgy and Bess.

“You must keep learning and working. The talent without work is worthless.”
