Earlier this week, string soloists had the unique opportunity of working in a masterclass with guest conductor, Valery Gergiev.

The Maestro coached RWCMD String Soloists through a 90 minute masterclass on Elgar’s Serenade for Strings.

Music students were then invited to watch the Mariinsky Stradivarius Ensemble rehearse before their public evening performance in the intimate surroundings of the College’s Dora Stoutzker Hall.

This year, the RWCMD String Soloists included string students from across the College, who had the opportunity to audition alongside final year and postgraduate string players for a place in the elite ensemble.

Here’s what some of our students thought about working with the Maestro:

The Mariinsky Stradivarius Ensemble’s performance with R17 Patron, Valery Gergiev marks the highlight in RWCMD’s Russia 17 Season.

The season of events brings 15 arts organisations across Wales together to mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution and its social and cultural impact.

Russia 17 continues with the Richard Burton Company’s production of Stars in the Morning Sky, as well as the Royal Welsh College Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ winter concert at Cardiff’s St. David’s Hall.
