Design Success: Six graduates in the final of the Linbury Award – again!

Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama graduates have secured six of the 12 coveted final places for the Linbury Prize for Stage Design. It is the design world’s most prestigious award for emerging talent.

The result for 2021 spotlights an extraordinary track record for RWCMD. Of the 48 finalists selected across the last four Linbury Prize years, around half – 23 – have been brilliant young designers from the RWCMD powerhouse.

They will receive £4000 and the chance to work alongside an established designer to gain first-hand experience of production.

Director of Drama and Head of Design Sean Crowley, a world-leading stage designer himself, said:

‘The talent of our Design students speaks for itself, and this remarkable sweep in the 2021 Linbury Prize is a real tribute to that.’

‘This biennial event sees our young talent test themselves against the UK’s very best and it inspires us all. We see our brilliant young designers go from strength to strength at RWCMD and onto fascinating careers and we’re immensely proud of every one of them.’

This year’s six become the latest additions to an impressive list of RWCMD finalists and winners who are making their mark in industry.

These include 2019 joint winner Rose Revitt whose public installation The Tree will be revealed at the National Theatre from January 2022, and 2007 winner Tom Scutt who is currently directing set and costume design for Cabaret.
