Congratulations to Welsh music student, Emyr Wyn Jones who celebrated St David’s Day 2015 by winning the prestigious Bruce Millar Gulliver Prize.

Bass baritone Emyr, pictured here playing Papageno in RWCMD’s production of The Magic Flute, competed for the £10,000 award against singers from the other five UK conservatoires at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Emyr, who  graduated with a first class Honours degree last summer and is now continuing his studies on the Opera MA, sang Bottom’s Dream from Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, Si Tra i Ceppi from Handel’s Berenice, and Madamina from Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The panel consisted of judges from the National Opera Studio, English National Opera and professional singers.

“It feels great to win this prize, particularly when the standard this year was so high, and I was the youngest there, and to top it all it was St David’s Day. But it’s even better to know that this is the second year the College has won it, and that I’m following in Trystan’s footsteps, who won it last year.”

Continuing the Welsh Saint’s celebrations, the next day Emyr was joined by fellow RWCMD students and graduates, Trystan Griffiths, who won the prize last year, Samantha Price and Jessica Robinson, singing at the  St David’s Day performance at the Guildhall in the City of London. They were accompanied by graduate and WNO repetiteur David Doidge.
